Roche Holding Seeks Approval for Its Cancer Drug

The Swiss drug maker, Roche Holding has filed its application for approval in the US and Europe for its new drug vemurafenib. The drug is designed to treat the most serious form of cancer Melanoma and is also known as RG7204. The drug maker has also filed for the approval of diagnostics test for the disease.

With a federally funded study having reveled last week that both cancer drug bevacizumab (brand name Avastin) and ranibizumab (brand name Lucentis) are equally effective in treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the debate over the use of the two drugs - both of which are manufactured by Roche Holding AG - has now moved into clinical practice!

The debate over the relative advantages of two Roche-developed drugs, Avastin and Lucentis, for eye disorders is likely to intensify --- with a company-backed survey indicating that Avastin has a greater risk of side effects vis-à-vis the more expensive Lucentis!

Roche files application to FDA for its new cancer drug T-DM1

According to a Wednesday statement by Swiss drug maker Roche Holding AG, the company has filed an application to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a new cancer drug – called trastuzumab-DM1 (T-DM1) - for women suffering from advanced breast cancer.
As per the information forwarded by the company, T-DM1 will help the Swiss drug-maker substitute one of its best-selling cancer drugs, Herceptin, for advanced breast cancer patients.

As was confirmed by the company on Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration has awarded its approval to Roche Holding's Acterma drug, which has been developed to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
The medicine, manufactured by Roche's Genentech unit, already has approval for use and marketing in Europe and Japan and is expected by the firm to be yet another blockbuster product.

Hedgehog is one of the latest anticancer targets currently. This signaling molecule called hedgehog initiates growth processes during embryonic stages and childhood but it is stopped during adulthood. While it is not turned off, it promotes growth in cancer cells.
