This Thursday is being celebrated as the Great American Smokeout which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society with an aim to bring together smokers who together decide to quit the deadly habit for a minimum of 24 hours.
Dramatic changes have been noticed in the attitudes regarding this addiction for tobacco and a huge reduction has been recorded in the number of smoking people since the start of the Smokeout since the year
1977.
The event which is held annually includes activities at a local and national level which aims at encouraging all the smokers to come together and quit their addiction for at least one whole day and hope that they may take up the decision to quit this habit permanently.
The Smokeout has assisted in concentrating on the harmful affects of tobacco smoking and has also added to the ‘cultural revolution’ in tobacco control according to the American Cancer Society.
As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the number of adult smokers in the US reduced from 34 percent to just 21 percent during the years 1978 and 2009.
