Paramedics from the North West region have appealed that they risk their lives for the lives of others and therefore their unpaid lunch break should be removed.
As per the current system the ambulance bosses seek volunteers from among the workers to be on call during lunch hours. This system was introduced six years ago.
When an emergency call is received on 999 by a crew which is not operating during lunch hours the call gets transferred to the next nearest vehicle which could be several miles away.
In case some paramedics are sent to perform a duty during their munch hours they are given an added 25 pounds compensation but they get no money if they are not called during their lunch timings.
This simply means that some of these emergency workers are off the job for about half an hour per shift which makes the staff lose up to 1,500 pounds every year in comparison what they could be earning if they were paid.
