The announcement was recently made by the Gillard Government that it will be appointing a panel of experts to file a report by next year end on giving choices for progressing constitutional acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Indigenous leaders like Professor Patrick Dodson along with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda have very gladly welcomed this announcement.
This announcement should also be considered as a significant step towards the health system issue according to Judith Dwyer who is a Professor of Health Care Management at Flinders University along with a Research Program Leader for the Lowitja Institute.
Apart from saying this she wrote several comments on this topic. She said that there was never an agreement achieved between the original Australians and the newcomers. There were many fights and battles and then settlements but no formal agreement was reached unlike other similar countries like Canada, USA and New Zealand.
She wrote that another thing which would provide a solid basis for the health system efforts is recognition.
