Second trial of human embryonic stem cells cleared by the FDA

Second trial of human embryonic stem cells cleared by the FDAThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the US has recently given a nod for conducting another round of clinical trials involving human embryonic stem cells.

The FDA gave its approval for the Phase I/II trial of retinal cells for patients who were suffering from Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy which is a childhood version of macular degeneration.

This information was revealed by the Advanced Cell Technology Inc. on Monday this week. The company also has hopes of treating these patients by giving them new retinal pigment epithelium cells in place of those that are damaged by the disease.

This disease can be explained from an earlier Booster shots post that it affects about one child out of every 10,000 and patients begin loosing their central vision during the ages of 6-20. As this disease spreads objects start appearing blurry and distorted and patients could even have a problem in adjusting their vision in dim light. Almost half of those who get affected lose their vision by age 50 and there is no cure yet.
