Life saving drug available to just 3 lakh HIV+ patients

HIV patientsPrevious year around 1.2 lakh new people got infected with HIV despite the fact that the rate of incidence of HIV had reduced by almost 50 percent during the last 10 years. Presently India is at number 3 spot in the world with the highest number of HIV patients after South Africa and Nigeria.

The prevalence of the deadly disease is, however, still very low at .31 percent from .36 percent in the year 2006. In all there are about seven lakh Indians suffering from the HIV but only about three lakh have access to the life-saving anti-retroviral (ART) drugs.

Apart from these figures there are about 18,000 HIV births from 65,000 HIV+ mothers. In all there are about 27 million pregnancies every year in the country.

These figures have been received from the 2010 AIDS epidemic report which is the most comprehensive report on a single disease revealed by the UNAIDS this week. Experts say that the HIV epidemic is on the wane for the very first time.

Apart from India there are about 56 more countries which have achieved a significant reduction in the rates of new cases of HIV patients.
