New Zealand government has announced $500m for Auckland's rail system for helping it to buy environment friendly electric trains. Transport Minister Steven Joyce added that the loan would be sectioned as soon as possible for beginning the first train operations from 2013.
Auckland's rail network has already achieved double tracking and the next stage of electrification is a step to provide Aucklanders with a speedy and very comfortable journey.
Joyce added, "The decision will not only significantly improve the quality of Auckland public transport, but also change the way Aucklanders view public transport and their city."
Mike Lee, the Chairman of Auckland Regional Council, termed the rail project as a huge leap forward and thanked government for making finance available for the project.
Mr. Joyce said that the upgrade would help to mitigate increasing traffic problem at peak hours in Auckland, a crucial city for New Zealand’s future success.
The Auckland Regional Transport Authority and the NZ Transport Agency have been asked to ensure affordable fees for passengers in Auckland's metro rail system, Mr. Joyce informed.
