High HIV Risks for Homosexual Men

Homosexual MenMillions of people die due to HIV every year. Experts found that although HIV risks have been reduced in pregnant women and female sex workers, but the fear continues to haunt a lot of men, who are sexually involved with other men. A recent survey found that almost 6000 men have sex with men (MSM).

Bindu Madhav Khire, Coordinator of the Sampathik Trust said: "So far, we have provided intervention in the form of condoms and other medical aid to 1,600 MSMs in the city and surrounding areas". She even appealed a lot of men to undergo a HIV test.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation via the NGO Pathfinder have funded Sampathik Trust by granting an amount of RS 30 lakh for the distribution of 20,000 condoms in Pune and around another 12,000 condoms in Pimpri.

Khire added that rather than organizing events, such a campaign should be promoted to help in spreading awareness and encouraging people to undergo HIV tests.

A lot of circumstances may force a man to indulge into sexual activities with another man. Many a times it gets difficult to locate MSM, as a lot of men, who live away from their families and hometown often tend to get attached to other men. Bisexual men develop high risks of HIV transmission, says Dr R S Paranjape, Director of NARI.
