Many Civil Servants Falling Prey to HIV Virus

HIV VirusThe incidence of AIDS cases is getting prevalent among civil servants, which can be cited from the fact that every year a number of bureaucrats seek compensation for their antiretroviral medicine.

Dr. Somyot Kittimunkong, Director of the Aids division at the Disease Control Department stated that annually around 20,000 bureaucrats demand refunding for the cost of antiretroviral medicine at the healthcare unit. It also included health officials who get infected by using used needles of their families.

He added that the actual statistics could be as high as 60,000 of civil servants living with HIV virus. In Thailand, there are about 520,000 people who have contracted HIV and an additional 10,853 infections have been seen this year among adults and children.

The vulnerable group remains the gay men of having maximum tendency to carry HIV virus. Dr. Kittimunkong advised people who indulged in unprotected sex during last 10 years to get themselves checked for HIV.

HIV blood test is provided for free by the National Health Security Office. The service has been employed by around 250,000 people and among them, 7% were detected with HIV.

Prof. Chuanchom Sakondhavat, Director of Khon Kaen University's Aids Institute expressed that the campaign aimed at decreasing the infection rate.

The doctor said, "Most new infections are detected among people aged between 19 and 29. Youths now have sex at a younger age and many of them often change sexual partners".
