Contact may not build Dannevirke wind firm

Contact-EnergyThough Contact Energy managed to win an appeal to build a $400 million wind firm earlier this week, independent consultants feel that the company may not go for it in the near future as the project is not viable.

Meanwhile, the company too has not given any clarification regarding the beginning of the project. The only communiqué that has come so far is that the process will start only when the market conditions permit.

As per the appeal won by Contact, the energy producer can built a wind firm with 52 150-meter tall turbines and 58 turbines which could be up to a height of 125 meters near Dannevirke.

For the permission of the project, Contact faced a stiff opposition from local opponents.

But, Australian-controlled energy producer finally managed to win the $150,000 overpower the local land owners who had no means to keep the legal battle to go on. The legal win has given the company a 5-year consent to build the wind firm.

However, visibly dissatisfied with the outcome, Mark Stewart, a Christchurch-based businessman, has requested the government to take immediate action to safeguard the local land owners’ rights.
