Around 740,000 people in China are carrying HIV virus and there are nearly 100,000 people who are living with AIDS.

The menace of HIV is more prevalent in China's six regions namely Henan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangdong, Xinjiang and Guangxi that comprise 77.1% of total population of those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Even children are falling prey to HIV/AIDS. As per the estimations made by experts, between 500,000 and 900,000 children under the age of 15 are suffering from HIV/AIDS.

HIV spread in China is basically contributed by unsafe sex, as per an official statement. Among total HIV infections that were found between January and end-October this year, 13% were transmitted through gay sex.

Though, there have been employed prevention measures such as education and condom distribution, still those steps have not remained completely successful.

Also, as HIV/AIDS patients are considered as stigma to the society, so they often face discrimination relating to employment and social abandonment. They also have less access to drugs and healthcare.

The Government of China is endeavoring to battle the AIDS pandemic in the country and to eliminate the stigma against it.

The expansion of an intervention program was recently announced by a health official, which will cover at least 90% of HIV/AIDS vulnerable groups by 2015.
