Golden Kiwifruit Less Likely to Cause Allergic Reactions: Study

StudyThe numbers of allergic reactions related to the kiwifruit have witnessed an upsurge in the recent past. People affected by allergic reactions have increased, especially as the fruit has been available in stores across the world.

However, a recent study has found that the likelihood of people suffering from allergies because of the fruit depends on its varieties. The findings are beneficial, especially as European countries like Finland and France have seen Kiwi being ranked in the top 10 causes of allergies.

The tests were conducted by researchers at the Medical University of Vienna and were led by Karin Hoffmann-Sommergruber. The number of volunteers in the study was 37 and it was found that people were less likely to be allergic to the gold variety of the fruit and more allergic to the deep-green variety.

Though, in a total 6 varieties were tested in the research, which included the Hayward Variety, Summer 3373, Hort 16A, Zespri Gold and Jintao. It was concluded in the study that the Hayward variety was the most likely to cause adverse reactions, while the Summer and Hort 16A were related to only slight allergies.

Talking about the stud, Hoffmann-Sommergruber said the high concentration of the allergy causing protein in green varieties of the kiwifruit was responsible for triggering the reaction. She said golden kiwis were low in the concentration of that protein and thus, resulted in a fewer reactions.
