The Government has been urged by a charity to make an extension in the fuel support it provides in winter as there are many people who are finding it hard to pay heating bills.
The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign has released a report, as per which a number of households in Kent are facing fuel crisis and they are also struggling to pay heating, gas and water payments. Therefore, the charity is calling for extending winter fuel payments.
As per the system of fuel payments, an amount worth £250 is received by those aged above 60 and those over 80 get £400 for compensating their bills. Last year, a fuel payment was provided to 200,000 households, which will surge to 233,400 this year, including number of allocation in Medway to be 35,910.
Robert Meadowcroft, Chief Executive of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign expressed that it was not reasonable that people with severe muscle disease and other disabilities were not receiving support in winter.
"The Government must act now to offer a financial lifeline to families severely affected by disability and ill health and extend winter fuel support", he said.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is officially and centrally entitled to provide fuel allowance, but the support networks has been established by Kent County Council via adult social services. For providing someone such a monetary support, the things taken into consideration are heating and electricity costs and person's disability.
KCC says that they being at local level have no control over providing fuel allowance, as it is a responsibility of centre.
