A recently conducted research has reached the conclusion that activities like meditation and remembering various happy and sad events of life are just as effective in combating the problem of depression as medication. It has further been stated in the research that people can prevent themselves from going into depression again by observing these two activities.
One of the authors in the study, Zindel V. Segal said that meditation can help in controlling emotional points, which happen to trigger a relapse of people going into depression again.
The researcher from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Canada further stated that though, antidepressants are known to supply substances that affect areas of the brain related to depression. But, the actual cause of concern is that more and more people end up not following their medication regimen.
The latest study has further suggested that though, meditation is helpful, yet someone opting out of medication should consult their psychiatrist or GP first as it is not advisable to impoverish the brain from its daily dose of chemicals, it is used to. The research work has already appeared in the December edition of the publication Archives of General Psychiatry.
The conclusion of this study will go a long way in providing care to people suffering from depression and will be beneficial for those, who would be cautious of consuming prescription drugs.
