May Wang’s lawyer asks for bankruptcy suspension

May-WangThe lawyer for the controversial businesswoman May Wang returned to court today asking for his client's bankruptcy to be kept suspended ahead of her fight for having it revoked.

Wang is the front person for a group of Chinese investors who are looking to purchase $1.5 billion worth of New Zealand dairy farms. She had been declared bankrupt by the High Court of Auckland last week.

The court also rejected an offer of repaying 6c in the dollar to creditors to whom $22 million were owed after the collapse of Wang's hotel and property business Dynasty Group.

Wang's lawyer Paul Sills said that the appeals had been made last week in the Court of Appeal against both the prior High Court decisions.

Today he came to court asking to have the bankruptcy suspended, so as to put it on hold till at least the Court of Appeal made a decision on her appeals.

Her application was attacked by the Commissioner for Inland Revenue, Westpac, the Latitude group and also the Official Assignee.

All affidavits and submissions regarding the suspension bid will be made by Friday. Also a hearing date for the bid will be fixed before the end of the year.
