A union of prison guard's has said that the government by privatizing the prisons is doing more bad than good. At present the Australian government is trying to privatize the Auckland Central remand Prison.
And for the deal, they have shortlisted Serco which is a British company.
The contract is expected to start from next year. Before the current over, the company has already been in charge of running Acacia prison in Perth, Western Australia. It has been doing this business for the last six years.
Meanwhile, the protest in which even the Western Australian Community and Public Sector Union was involved said that if the contract is done then all that the company would do is that it will start looking for profits. And if that happens then the condition of the prison will get even worse than what it is now.
Besides that, a company driven prison will reduce the number of jobs and may even throw out staff. Lower pay for the officers and fewer staff per inmate can happen too.
Serco has denied the allegations but refused on job cut issues.
