Female Suicide Rates at an 10-Year High

SuicideThe suicide rate for young women in New Zealand has been stated to be at its highest mark since the year 1999. The finding has come after the Ministry of Health had released a statistical report regarding the number of female suicides in 2008.

The report has been titled as Suicide Facts, which reflected the high incidence rate of suicides and attempted suicides. There were 47-people admitted to hospitals in a week on an average throughout the year 2008 coming in for attempted suicides or self inflicted injuries.

It was also reported that there were 497-deaths, which took place and 2465 people, who had been admitted to hospitals. The suicide rate was at a high of 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people. Though, the number is significantly high, it was comparatively lower to the peak rate that suicides had achieved in 1998.

The highest suicide rate was found in people from the Maori community, which was at 13.3 deaths per 100,000, whereas, the rate for non-Maori people was at 10.6 for a population of 100,000.

However, there is good news as well, as the suicide rate for people from 15 to 24-years old had dropped by an exceptional 35.4%, when compared to the highest all time rate, recorded in 1995.
