Hospitals Under-Performing On Patient Care
Patient Care

The latest research analysis by Dr. Foster’s organization finds 12-trusts have been ‘significantly underperforming’, thereby jeopardizing patient safety.
The hospital watch dog has identified 27-trusts that have unusually high mortality rates i.e. a total of 5,000 more deaths than expected.
Sending out a task force to sort out the failings, NHS Foundation Trust has found Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals to be at the bottom of the league table.
Monitor, the body responsible for regulating foundation trusts, has stepped in after the reported poor hygiene, care standards and a death rate a third higher than the national average made the news.  The Observer reports that eight recently judged by the Care Quality Commission watchdog to be good or excellent featured amongst the 12-worst performers in the new table.
According to the research by Dr Foster’s organization has uncovered widespread safety issues, including 39% of trusts ‘failing to investigate unexpected deaths or cases of serious harm on their wards.’  There have been 209-cases of swabs and drill bits being left inside the patients after surgery, including 82-cases where the surgeons operated on the wrong body part.
Overall, Basildon, Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare Trust and The Lewisham Hospital Trust have been reported to be the three worst-performing NHS trusts.
The remaining nine are: University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire Trust; Weston Area Health Trust; South London Healthcare Trust; Tameside Hospital Foundation Trust; University Hospital of South Manchester Foundation Trust; St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals Trust; Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust; Blackpool Fylde and Wyre Hospitals Foundation Trust; and Hereford Hospitals Trust.
Basildon followed by the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was also bottom of the table for mortality rates.
Overall, hospital death rates in England have fallen 7%, but quality of care continues to vary greatly across the country, according to the report.
