Last winter witnessed children under the age of five being offered with immunization vaccinations against swine flu on the NHS following the virus causing much havoc and taking the shape of a pandemic.
However, with the pandemic jitters subsiding, the swine flu soon landed into the category of this year's seasonal flues. Now the vaccine is only offered to young children on the NHS if it discerns them as vulnerable because of an underlying medical condition.
The past few weeks have been witnessing a significant surge in the number of swine flu cases in England and Wales. The rise is majorly reported among young people contracting swine flu. However, experts are confident that the first flu epidemic for a decade could show a bit of relaxation in the New Year when young children return to school following the Christmas vacation.
As if now, the season has recorded over 27 deaths from flu, with over 33 % of them under the age of 18 and the youngest among them is claimed to be a year old.
It is reported that a new recommendation related to flu jabs for under five year olds will be passed by the Government's Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisation (JCVI), after tabling with its flu sub-committee is done.
