There is a warning by police to the public for a stylish EFTPOS skimming scam. It has taken in a number of business owners in its capture in the Far North.
There is a courier driver in the card-skimming scam which asks for a small payment for a delivery however the EFTPOS terminal is the original record of the cards and from this a duplicate card is prepared.
It was confirmed by the police that this year on Christmas Eve a Kerikeri shop owner was targeted by the scam. The had noticed withdrawal of several thousand dollars from his account by using a replica of his EFTPOS card.
Yesterday, three similar incidents were reported in Whangarei.
The physical feature of the fake courier driver was described as a tall, skinny European male with a beard, and he was about 50 years old. He was found in a green dress code with the company logo "NZ Transport Ltd" and he had put on a green baseball cap.
Sergeant Wendy Hall of Kerikeri Police held that the origin of this scam first was seen in Northland in the year 2008.
