Canadians Avoid Vaccinations, Numbers on the Rise in Toronto

fluThe flu season has just begun in Canada, and worried medical professionals have already started opining that probably a lot of people might not get their flu shots.

Apparently, experts feel that Canadians might be a little too tired of the ruckus that was created about the flu pandemic last year, and might just get a little complacent this time around.

It has also been informed that the most prevalent form of the flu this year is the H1N1 strain in Europe, whereas, Canada has been witnessing the H3N2 strain of the virus.

According to statistics released by the Public Health Agency, the country has till date witnessed a normal spread of the virus and there has been no untoward cases reported till date. The numbers of hospitalizations have also remained to be very normal and predictable.

Though, some localized areas in Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia have witnessed a sudden spurt in cases.

The total numbers of cases that have been reported in Canada have been around 515 this year. However, the previous couple of years had only witnessed 81-cases on an average till this time of the year, which clearly means that Toronto is reeling under an outbreak.

The high rates of infection has been blamed on the low number of vaccinations, the Head of Infection Control at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Dr. Allison McGeer has opined that low number of immunizations could possibly result in an increased number of cases this year.
