Avastin Use Could Lead to Heart Failure in Breast Cancer Patients

Avastin Use Could Lead to Heart Failure in Breast Cancer PatientsOn Tuesday, an analysis came on the surface, which revealed that breast cancer affected women who were given Avastin as treatment were more at risk to suffer heart failure in comparison to other women.

The results are produced by Dr. Toni Choueiri of Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston after examining data from five clinical trials involving 4,000 breast cancer patients at advanced stage.

The researchers discovered that those women who were treated with Avastin, 1.6% of them got affected with congestive heart failure in comparison to 0.4% of women who took placebo.

Avastin has been marketed for dealing with breast and other forms of cancers. However, the drug failed to prove its effectiveness and ensure increased survival in patients with breast cancer in four clinical trials. Last month, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration suggested that the drug should not be approved for treating breast cancer.

As per Choueiri, the rate of heart failure in breast cancer patients advanced with the use of Avastin. The reason could be the impact of the drug that clogs vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that is essential for the formation of blood vessels that nourish tumors. But, to ensure the sustenance of heart's structure, VEGF provides assistance. So its blockage could bring adverse effects for women affected with breast cancer whose hearts are already weakened by other treatments of cancer.
