A team of researchers from the Unite States of America has reported that numerous people were undergoing defibrillator implants, despite the fact that they did not need them. It was further informed that the procedure apart from increasing healthcare costs of the country was also leading to needless health complications in people.
The study that has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has informed that around 22.5% surgeries regarding the implants carried out in the country were absolutely unnecessary and that people were not even eligible for the procedure. People were receiving implants for very trivial reasons like someone suffering a heart attack was also being provided, with such plants.
Talking about the study, one of the authors from the Duke Clinical Institute in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Sana Al Khatib informed that he did not expect such a high number. He added that the high numbers of unnecessary surgeries were definitely a cause of concern.
Defibrillators are also known as ICDs, which are capable of detecting any unnatural heart beat rhythms. If there is any unnatural heart beat, it simply provides a milk electric shock to stabilize the heart beat of a person.
It is a known fact that ICDs can't be used by people, who have suffered a heart attack, or even undergone a bypass surgery.
