U.S. Government Officials Suggest Decreasing Fluoride Levels in Drinking Water

U.S. Government Officials Suggest Decreasing Fluoride Levels in Drinking WaterThe level of fluoride in the water supply of the country should be decreased to the lowest suggested threshold, as stated by U. S. Government officials on Friday.

The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency are of the view that the fluoride level in the drinking water should be decreased to 0.7 milligrams per liter of water, doing away with recommended level between 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams.

No doubt that fluoride helps preventing cavities and tooth decay, but if more amount of the chemical is ingested it could lead to staining and pitting of teeth, as found by a Government study. To get rid of this problem, the Government wants to reduce the fluoride level in water.

"Today's announcement is part of our ongoing support of appropriate fluoridation for community water systems, and its effectiveness in preventing tooth decay throughout one's lifetime", said Dr. Howard K. Koh, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health.

Also, the recommendation is based on the fact that now, there are many products such as toothpastes, mouth wash and fluoride supplements available in the market that if used along with the eater containing high fluoride levels can increase the fluoride intake of an individual, which could be damaging for teeth.
