Sources have said that the US Federal Communications Commission has decided that it will push for an incentive in spectrum auction. This is going to be down despite rising criticism for the step.
The opponents say that this auction would have been the quickest way to make wireless spectrum get in usage for the mobile broadband providers.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said the same thing while he was giving his speech during the ongoing CES conference in Las Vegas.
The chairman had urged the Congress to allow for the spectrum auctions to take place. Both the houses currently are in support of incentive auctions. In this form, the existing spectrum users are allowed to return back their spectrum and in lieu get a portion of the auction proceeds.
Mobile satellite operators and TV broadcasters are going to be the biggest beneficiary if at all such a thing happens.
But the critics like Gary Shapiro, head of the Consumer Electronics Association does not understand why the broadcasters should be paid for using spectrum which they had been using for free.
