Samsung Electronics mulls manufacturing of Web TV powered by Google

B-K-Yoon-samsungSamsung Electronics Co. disclosed on Saturday that it is now checking out the viability of manufacturing a television set run on Google's Android platform.

B K Yoon, President - Visual Display, Samsung, however, made it clear that the company is still reviewing whether it will manufacture the television or not. At present, the Korean giant is the world's largest manufacturer of flat-screen televisions in terms of shipments.

The attempt made by Samsung is part of Samsung's ongoing drive to enhance the company's product offerings in the television segment, in particular the smart television segment. The company expects this will also lead to maintain the bottomline, which was under some stress after product prices took a hit during the global slowdown.

While the company sold around 39 million flat screen TVs last year, as per Yoon, it now plans to sell 45 million flat screen TVs in 2011. In other categories it sold around 5 million smart televisions and 2 million 3-D television sets last year.

Considering the increasing popularity of Google's Android, Samsung is now interested in making use of the same to increase its competitive edge.
