Drug manufacturer Pharmaxis Ltd. has reported that its six month long dosing trail of the new drug Bronchitol has achieved remarkable results when tested on people suffering from cystic fibroids. In an "International Phase III" trial, the company reports that people treated showed much improved lung function.
"These results are very impressive and are of significant clinical relevance. For cystic fibrosis patients, consistent loss of lung function, averaging 1-2 per cent per year is the leading cause of death. The improvements now shown with Bronchitol treatment over a 12-month period hold out the promise that, with longer usage, Bronchitol can change the course of cystic fibrosis", said Pharmaxis Chief Executive Dr. Alan Robertson on Wednesday while announcing the trial's success.
According to the pharmaceutical company, Bronchitol is the first "dry-powder formulation" which has reported successful results in patients with cystic fibroids, offering a convenient option for sufferers of the condition who otherwise had to go through complex daily treatment routines.
The trial for the drug was conducted in 40 centers across UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
