New state-of-the-art digital equipment which will be available on new Breast Test Wales Mobile screening Units is going to replace the current analogous equipment for testing breast cancer in women in Wales and Gwent by next two years' time.
Within the targeted period almost 100,000 women in Wales and Gwent will be covered under this modern screening system. These mobile units are frequently visible in Gwent which helps women to have access to test them with any chance of breast cancer. It is a part of Wales-wide programme.
Professor Sir Mansel Aylward CB, chairman of Public Health Wales did not hide his excitement over this investment which will certainly bring a change in the programme. He said, "This puts the Breast Test Wales in an excellent position to continue to deliver an efficient and modern screening programme, maximising benefits from new technological developments."
As compared to its previous analogue unit the new high definition equipment will make the processing and analysis of the images faster, better and easier. It will also help the radiographers to avoid recalling the women for tests as they can see if the scans are alright for any further clinical analysis.
According to the figures, 6.7 out of every 1,000 women screened for cancers are detected with cancer in the first round and the number rises to 7.2 in the subsequent round. Breast Test Wales calls for more than 140,000 women every year who are tested for the screening.
