Exposure to Active TB Results in Infant's Death

14-week-old Douglas ''DJ'' Franco-Gill, one of the 5 babies exposed to active tuberculosis at the Canberra Hospital in September, died yesterday morning, leading the parents to blame the hospital and its authorities.

The baby was born 10 weeks premature, and his death is now subject to a coronial investigation.

Four newborn babies at the hospital between August and September were exposed to "the multi-drug resistant strain of tuberculosis in the antenatal unit by an undiagnosed new father". Last Wednesday, after his mother companied of his rapidly deteriorating health, DJ was admitted to the Canberra Hospital, but later discharged on Sunday. He was then checked by a specialist on Tuesday.

22 year old mother of the baby, Kylea Gill, has asserted that ACT Health did not take her worries abut her baby's falling health seriously. ''They told me it was reflux, but my little boy turned blue and we took him to hospital on Wednesday. They said it was nothing serious and discharged him, and now he is dead", she shared.

While declining to comment on the issue, ACT Health merely issued an official statement. ''We have been advised of the death of an infant. The matter is subject to coronial investigation. We will be making no further comment", it read.

Health Minister Katy Gallagher has also decided to stay quiet on the issue.
