Study: Vitamin-D Necessary for Healthy Infants

Vitamin-D Necessary for Healthy InfantsIn a new research, the researchers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), found that the deficiency of Vitamin-D in newborns lead to poor growth and weak bones.

The study recruited nearly 100 infants, all aged between 2 and 4 months, and their mothers. The intake patterns of Vitamin-D by both mothers and children were observed.

It was unveiled that, no less than 86.5% infants and 92.6% mothers were suffering from Vitamin-D deficiency. Moreover, those with high levels of deficiency were even found to be suffering from a condition in which, the thyroid glands secrete large quantities of parathormone to maintain low calcium levels in the body, commonly known as hyperparathyroidism.

Dr. Vandana Jain from AIIMS, who led the study, said that the primary reason for Vitamin-D deficiency is the less sun exposure and the excessive use of sun-screens now-a-days by women.

She suggested that at least 15 minute sun exposure should be experienced by women, everyday. She also promoted the intake of edibles such as fish, eggs, meat etc, which are rich sources of Vitamin-D.

Following the results, the medical experts at AIIMS are planning to induce Government to introduce Vitamin-D supplements for pregnant women as part of National Health Programmes.
