Debate over Statin Benefits to Low Risk Patients

Debate over Statin Benefits to Low Risk PatientsIf you are confused over statins, then you are not the only one. Recently a report has suggested that taking one of the cholesterol lowering drug statins could prove to be futile attempt to prevent heart attack. After a wide range review over statin, National Heart Foundation medical director Norman Sharpe has raised questions over the effective results of statin consumption to the low risk group.

Further, Sharpe affirmed that negligible benefits can be received from statin, especially if the patient has no cardiovascular history.

Contrary to that, report by Cochrane Library is asserting conclusive evidence of high success rate of statin in many cases. With over 2 million people suffering from heart diseases, the study recommends that people should be cautious while consuming the drug, if they belong to the low cardiovascular risk group.

Confirming the world wide agreement over the use of statin, Sharpe has appealed to identify the high risk patients so that appropriate treatment can be given.

Adding to the jinx is an influential cardiology organization, the Joint British Societies, which recommends more people to take this drug so as to reduce heart risk.

Since no research group has revealed any conclusive evidence about the adverse affects of statin, people are worried about the possible harmful results in the long run.
