Smoking in Cars with Children to be Prohibited by Saskatchewan

According to a new legislation introduced by the Province of Saskatchewan, put forward on Wednesday, any vehicle with children of under 16 on-board will be considered as a non-smoking region. The ban on smoking in cars while children are in them was one of the many proposals being considered by the Government.

The authorities have confirmed that smoking in "outdoor patio areas associated with bars and restaurants", however, is not a part of the legislation's ban.

"We had ... certainly heard some positive on the issue. But also I can tell you that through our caucus and cabinet we heard a lot of negative as well. So we decided to do a balanced approach", shared Don McMorris, Saskatchewan's Minister of Health, while talking about the decision to not ban smoking in outdoor patios.

The legislation has also placed a ban on tobacco sales in pharmacies, as well as the sale of flavored cigars, which many tout as harmless.

As has been confirmed by the Government, the Ministry of Health is currently investing funds worth a Million Dollars every year, over the coming 3 years for a "comprehensive tobacco strategy with particular focus on protecting children and youth".
