The cholera outbreak that has been spreading like fire across Haiti since the month of October last year has resulted in the death of more than 4,000 people in the country. Apart from that, the epidemic has spread across all the ten provinces of the nation.
According to data released by the Public Health Ministry of Haiti, the total number of people for whom cholera proved to be fatal was at 4,030. People, who have contracted cholera since the first case was reported on the 16th of October last year, have been stated to be around 209,034.
It was announced by authorities on Friday that around 115,238-people have already been cured of cholera till date.
Meanwhile the fatality rate for people suffering from cholera has been stated to be around 1.9%. The highest numbers of deaths have been reported from the province of Artibonite where 857-people have fallen prey to the outbreak.
Apart from Haiti, the outbreak has spread to the neighbouring country of Dominican Republic, where one person has already died from cholera and 238 have fallen sick.
According to health experts from France, the outbreak was caused by Nepalese soldiers posted in the country. The men were a part of a UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti and were dumping their waste in a river, which happens to be a main source for drinking water.
