Now the residents of Edinburgh can recycle plastic bottles and old batteries using the council’s kerbside pickup. Starting Monday, 31st January, this organization will pick up plastic bottles and batteries from the red and blur kerbside boxes respectively for recycling.
This initiative follows another announcement of a “pilot waste food project” from April 2011. In this initiative, food scraps will be collected from 20,000 Edinburgh households in Edinburg’s city centre and the East of the city.
“We are really stepping up our recycling activity in Edinburgh", said Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environmental Leader.
People can currently recycle their old batteries at the Community Recycling Centres. With the help of this initiative, the people will be able to recycle from the waste boxes itself. This initiative is done to suppress environmental cause.
In a recent study, it has been revealed that 275,000 tonnes of plastic are used each year in UK, and around 15 million bottles per day. Thus recycling is very essential for the maintenance of the environment.
Edinburgh City Council spends approximately £7m per year on landfill tax, and this will increase to £12m by 2014 to maintain the current volume of waste. Thus, the need for the recycling is very essential.
