A very large Scandinavian study, which involved almost all residents of the place, has revealed that, contrary to the popular belief, there actually is no link whatsoever between high mobile phone usage and developing brain tumors. The results were put forward on Thursday.
As per the study, mobile phone usage surged manifolds during the 1990s, but there was no significant increase the cases of brain tumors during the period. Despite the fact that years and years of research and studies have failed to establish any connection between mobile phones and the disease, activist groups and some research continue to raise concerns about the same, and the new study is looking to put many of the concerns at rest.
"We did not detect any clear change in the long-term time trends in the incidence of brain tumors from 1998 to 2003 in any subgroup", explained Isabelle Deltour of the Danish Cancer Society, the study's lead author.
Annual incidence rates of two common and severe types of brain tumor, glioma and meningioma, were analyzed by Deltour's team of researchers, in adults aged 20-79 from the areas of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, from the years 1974 to 2003. According to the study, this is almost the entire population of the regions, i. e., 16 million people.
Over a period of 3 decades, about 60,000 people were diagnosed with the conditions, and while there was a minor, steady increase in the cases, it started well in 1974, much before there were any mobile phones around, leading the researchers to note that there, actually, is no concrete link between the usage of cell phones and development of tumors.
The detailed study has been published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
