FDA Raises Serious Doubts on the Safety of Breast ImplantsRecently, breast implants were put under serious doubts after federal health officials suspected its possible link to a rare form of cancer called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, or ALCL. It created more urgency of questioning after Food and Drug Administration also confirmed the possibility between the two.

Experts opine that though the risk is quite miniscule but it can't be ignored as there have been some cases reported with this linkage. Till date 60 cases have been found of this nature among the 5-10 million women with breast implants worldwide.

Explaining the nature of the issue, experts described that ALCL starts with attacking lymph nodes and the skin. Patients suffering from this type of cancer generally account pain, lumps, swelling and other problems at the initial stages.

"We are very interested in trying to understand more specifically which patients may be at more risk and which breast implants may present a higher risk," Dr. William Maisel, FDA's chief scientist for devices, said on a recent call with reporters.

FDA researchers believe that this type of cancer is so rare that it would require a very long time to come to any exact correlation between these two. A definite finding can only be achieved once valid data is collected from thousands of women for more than 10 years.
