Cosmetic Surgery Sectors Aggressively Oppose "Botax"

As a part of the major revamp of the country's healthcare system, the US Government is looking to make some very significant changes to the way the country's system works, including introducing the Botax, an additional 5% levy to be imposed on corrective cosmetic surgery.

While it would mean at least $5.8 Billion over the coming decade for the Government, the cosmetic surgery industry has taken up arms against it, stating that a tax on these procedures would mean much less people going in for them. Renowned manufacturers of anti-wrinkle drugs, breast implants and other corrective surgery related products are trying their best to derail the proposed tax.

While New Jersey already imposes about 6% on certain cosmetic surgery procedures, the Botax would be the first Federal tax on all these surgeries.

Allergan Inc. and Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp., leading firms involved with aesthetic treatments, are currently in the process of holding very public protests and campaigns against the Botax. Allergan is the maker of popular Botox.

In its defense, the Senate has said that revamps have been made to all parts of healthcare and cosmetic surgery is a part of it as well, while asserting that those really want to go in for procedures would not be discouraged by a small 5% tax.
