There was a study conducted on about 900 children from elementary school from about 10 cities in the United States and the results showed that having a working mom means an increasing waistline for kids.
Researchers at American University, Cornell University, and the University of Chicago found that over the years there was an increase in children's body mass index or BMI.
These findings were most seen in children who went to fifth and sixth grades.
The researchers stated that due to paucity of time to buy groceries and preparing food at home, kids got affected. Another reason for the same was more take-out dinners and food rich in calories that restaurants offer. Various aspects taken into consideration were time spent by kids watching TV, physical activity, and the time for which they remained unsupervised.
Researchers further added that reform could take place if a majority of moms in North America working outside of the home realized the importance of themselves in their children’s life.
Study lead Taryn W. Morrissey, assistant professor in public administration and policy at American University said, “Community- and school-based programs offer promise for promoting healthy weight by providing information to children and their families about nutrition and exercise, as well as how to make quick, healthy meals.”
