A report that has appeared in the Manawatu Standard has stated that the poster child for Starship Hospital, Tyler Young is lucky to be alive after he was discharged from the Palmerston North Hospital with a paracetamol for bruises. Apparently, following a car crash involving Tyler and his mother Angela Young, on the 3rd of August 2009, the baby was discharged from the hospital with an undiagnosed broken neck.
It needs to be noted that the paramedic’s report clearly mentioned that the child had suffered a possible neck injury. Though, a junior doctor at the hospital did not make note of the neck injury and discharged the baby to a caregiver.
It was only on the following day that the baby’s father, Rob Young who was out of town at the time of the crash, noticed that the child’s neck was limp and he immediately rushed the child to a hospital, where an x-ray confirmed a broken neck.
Following the report, Tyler was immediately airlifted to the Starship Hospital. Since the incident, Tyler has undergone around a 100-xrays, three CAT scans and an MRI. Tyler has also received a surgery to place a bone graft.
The case had received immense media glare after the baby was photographed with a halo traction. It was reported that Tyler might have been the youngest person to wear the equipment.
