Sprint to offer dual-screen ‘Echo’ smartphone

A new Android-based dual-screen smartphone, called the Echo, was unveiled on Monday by the US carrier Sprint Nextel and Kyoto-based Kyocera Corp. The Echo will make use of carrier’s third-generation (3G) wireless technology. Sprint is going to offer the 3G handset at a time when it planning to spend $5 billion to upgrade its network to 4G technology. Fared Adib, vice president of product development at Sprint, said that they hadn’t wanted to delay the innovation on the handset to wait for 4G technology. Speaking on the topic, Adib said, “We believe this is a pretty big deal. We didn’t want to hold up the innovation on the device to wait for 4G capability.” The Echo features two 3.5-inch touchscreens. One touchscreen is stalked on the top of the other and the two open side by side to work in-tandem. Buyers will get an additional battery that they will be ale to charge simultaneously with the device.
