A recent research undertaken by scientists Boston Biomedical Research Institute and the University of Pennsylvania has revealed that a constituent in green tea is a part of a chemical mixture that could effectively help treat various brain disorders like Alzheimer's.
Combination of EGCG, an important component found in green tea, with another chemical can prevent as well as attack and destroy a type of protein structures known as amyloids, which are linked to the root causes of some of the most fatal brain degeneration conditions like Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's.
"These findings are significant because it is the first time a combination of specific chemicals has successfully destroyed diverse forms of amyloids at the same time. Our findings are certainly preliminary and we need further work to fully comprehend the effects of EGCG in combination with other chemicals on amyloids", said Dr. Martin Duennwald of BBRI, co-author of the study.
For many years now, scientists and medical researchers have been trying to find effective ways to "prevent the formation of amyloids plaques", which are essentially tightly packed sheets of protein and can "infiltrate" a person's brain. These are difficult to dissolve and are highly stable and boast very complex composition. The study has been detailed in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.
