Unilever is voluntarily recalling all canned Slim Fast drinks, over fears of "bacterial contamination" which could cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting in drinkers. The recall has affected about 10 million products currently offered on the American market.
The firm has said that the drinks are possibly all contaminated with the microorganism Bacillus cereus, and while the likelihood of a serious health problem is less, the recall is till being undertaken as a precautionary measure. The FDA has, however, shared that no deaths or injuries as a result of the drink have been reported or are associated with the recall.
It seems that the contamination has occurred during the manufacturing process, and Unilever discovered the "pathogen" and informed the FDA on Wednesday. It has been reported that an unknown number of people had experienced sickness around 6-15 hours after consumption of the drink, but they successfully recovered after 24 hours.
The recall includes "all Slim-Fast products in cans, regardless of flavor, best-by date, lot code or UPC number". No other Slim Fast products have been covered.
The company has said that it is currently looking to determine the production problem that caused the contamination and production has been halted. Additionally, people have been urged to discard the drinks.
