With a national childcare campaign by Daycare Trust revealing that childcare costs are rapidly rising in the UK, working mothers may be forced to look into the flexible benefits of working from home.
The Daycare Trust survey cautions that the soaring childcare costs are making family life increasingly difficult. Specifically, the survey found that the cost of a nursery place for a child of two or over has increased by nearly 5 percent over the last year – thereby indicating a much higher rise in children’s nursery charges as compared to the increase in the average wage of the parents.
Noting that it is unfair that Britain spends much more on childcare vis-à-vis any other country, Anand Shukla, the acting CEO of the Daycare Trust, said: “When parents sit down to calculate their family finances and see childcare costs increasing far faster than their wages, it is no wonder they may think twice about the economic sense of staying in work.” Already, the Bristol Evening Post reported that ‘Keep Time For Children’ last month found that 1.3 million families in the UK now have at least one parent working both Saturdays and Sundays.
Even though it is a legal responsibility of the councils to ensure that sufficient childcare is available for working parents, the findings of the Daycare Trust survey indicate that many parents feel there is a lack of availability in their area.
