According to a new report from security vendor McAfee it was revealed that Chinese hackers working regular business hours shifts stole sensitive intellectual property from energy companies’ four years and now using relatively unsophisticated intrusion methods in an operation dubbed "Night Dragon.”
Greg Day, director of security strategy claimed that the oil, gas and petrochemical companies targeted were hit with these technical attacks on their public-facing Web sites. The hackers also used social-engineering techniques to get key company executives in Kazakhstan, Taiwan, Greece, and the U.S. to share information.
Chinese hacking tools were used in hacking by the underground hackers. Thus, the attacks have been linked to China. McAfee said in its report that the attacks appeared to originate from computers on IP (Internet protocol) addresses in Beijing, between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time. Thus this has been confirmed that the culprits were regular company employees rather than freelance or unprofessional hackers.
"It is likely this person is aware or has information that can help identify at least some of the individuals, groups, or organizations responsible for these intrusions", McAfee said.
In 2009, Google has been attacked by Chinese hackers. The hacking was also targeted to many other multinational companies under operation name "Operation Aurora."
