It has been confirmed that April onwards, the drug Avandia which is responsible for a higher risk of heart problems in patients will be withdrawn from the market. The reason for the April withdrawal date is to ensure that the doctors do not have to rush the change. This drug was been used for the treatment of diabetes type 2. Agencies in New Zealand have been monitoring the usage of Avandia since 2005.
Though not publicly funded nearly a 100 people have been using Avandia in New Zealand. Medlife, the makers of the drug have requested people consuming the drug to consult there doctors before taking any step. Doctors have also been instructed not to prescribe the drug anymore.
America’s Food and Drug Administration and The European Medicine Agency have already taken the required actions to stop the usage of this drug due to the higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.
It has been agreed by Dr Stewart Jessamine, group manager Medlife that Avandia makes diabetic patients more vulnerable to heart problems.
The drug has been spectacularly effective on some of the patients but to guarantee this is a difficult task.
Type 2 diabetes has its own risk of cardiac problems. A further use of this drug makes it verse.
