Maugansville Ruritan building on Monday night was a host to a beautiful event regarding the fight for life. It was the venue for the annual dinner by the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event that is held on an annual basis.
Many survivors had come to the event to narrate their tryst with cancer and how they are fighting it or have defeated the dreaded condition. Among the people speaking at the event was a 69-year old woman from Hagerstown, Jacqueline Thompson, who said that she was triumphant in her battle against cancer and was blessed by god himself.
She went on to say: "I'm standing upright on the right side of the dirt". Thompson happened to be just one person among many, who spoke about their experience with cancer.
Many people had gathered to be a part of the occasion as sleet and freezing rain showered down outside. Tables were covered in red and the fragrance of the most tastefully prepared lasagne, fried chicken and ham did the rounds all around.
The dinner was started about half a decade ago as a gesture to people who have survived cancer. Many prizes like candles, stuffed animals and various Relay for Life articles are distributed during the event.
