An international study which was conducted recently has revealed that cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women all over the world. Indonesia is the worst effected country where almost 20 women die from cervical cancer every day.
According to Iris Rengganis, an internist at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, cervical cancer is curable and it can be prevented also. But unfortunately in more than 70% cases, this disease gets detected when it has reached at the advanced stage. when reaches to the advanced stage then it is not possible to cure the patients. This is why number of death due to cervical cancer is rising every year.
Scientific research shows that Human Papilloma Virus or HPV is responsible for the cervical cancer. As this virus leads to abnormal growth of cells in the cervix and that is the cause of the disease.
Iris Rengganis further added that young women who indulge in sexual relationship at an early age with multiple partners are at high risk of the disease. Because there are maximum possibilities of getting infected with the HPV virus during unprotected sexual intercourse. So use of condoms is mandatory to reduce the risk of infection.
She also informed that women aged between 30 and 50 years should be extra cautious. At the same time women who are chain smokers and suffer from vitamin deficiency need take extra precautions.
