Microsoft to Kinect SDK for Windows

Microsoft to Kinect SDK for WindowsMicrosoft will roll out a Kinect software development kit (SDK) for Windows PCs this spring, to allow third-party developers to experiment with the resourceful technology.

The controller-free camera device, Kinect, allows Xbox 360 users to play games using body gestures. But, existing Kinect games can be played only on an Xbox 360 games console.

However, the release of Windows SDK will bring the technology to Windows PCs. The company believes that the move will attract more developers to Windows.

Making the announcement, Microsoft’s chief research & strategy officer Craig Mundie said, "Microsoft's investments in natural user interfaces are vital to our long-term vision of creating computers that are intuitive to use and able to do far more for us.”

The first version, which is scheduled for June, will be offered only to volunteers who will agree to distribute their programs free of cost. Those who wish to sell their apps will receive a version sometime later.

The popularity of the Kinect device can be estimated from the fact that Microsoft sold eight million units of in just two months of its launch.
