Vaccine for Dengue on the Way!

DengueSooner, we will have the vaccine for deadly dengue fever. The Thailand scientists have achieved a breakthrough in developing a prototype vaccine against the deadly disease. We can expect this vaccine to be in market in next
10 years. The vaccine has to undergo few further tests, before it becomes suitable for human treatment.

The new vaccine is the result of combined efforts by scientists from Government’s National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and Thailand’s Chiang Mai University, Mahidol University.

Dengue is mosquito-borne disease and causes severe flu-like illness among the victims. Till now, no specific treatment was available for this deadly disease. There are four known types of dengue viruses and scientists claim that the new vaccine will be effective against all of them.

Associate Professor Nopporn Sithisombat at Chiang Mai University in Northern Thailand said that their aim is to produce vaccine against dengue fever in children and this is the first success towards their goal. So far, the trials for vaccine were only conducted on mice and monkeys. Their next step is to put it for trials on human.

Dengue affects mostly the people living in tropical regions, and nearly 10 million cases of severe dengue fever are reported every year worldwide.
