The hearing of a Singaporean surgeon who generated the bill of whopping $24.8 million for one of her patients will take place today at the High Court.
It is alleged that Dr. Susan Lim treated Pengiran Anak Hajah Damit for breast cancer between 2001 and 2007. The patient died in August 2007 and the doctor had piled up a bill of $24.8 million by then, an amount that literally shocked Singapore Medical Council (SMC).
On being asked by the council to generate a reasonable bill, she plunged it to $3.25 million, which was still a lot higher than what the council staff expected.
In the row of contention, a written petition was filed against Dr. Lim after she refused to negotiate the bill further.
The attorney representing SMC, Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo, said that it is not for the first time that Dr. Lim has over-charged her patients. He requested for a disciplinary committee to look into the matter and to question Dr. Lim over her behavior.
In her defense, Dr. Lim accentuated that she before-handedly informed Pengiran that her treatment would cost $100,000 to $200,000 per day.
But despite this, she emphasized Dr. Lim to treat her and even assured the doctor that her fees will be well taken care of.
